#209 Tom Mischke and Ron Rosenbaum

May 31, 2013
4

With Cy Amundson who appears halfway through.  Yes really.

Tom Mischke is a Minnesota writer, musician, and radio talk show host on WCCO NewsRadio 830 based in Minneapolis. He was formerly employed at City Pages, a Twin Cities alternative news, arts and entertainment publication. For 17 years he hosted The Mischke Broadcast on KSTP, until it was cancelled in December 2008. His show featured quirky regular callers, stream of consciousness humor, and experts on any topic he found interesting. Since 1998, Mischke has been the winner of the “Best AM Radio Personality” award given by the local weekly alternative newspaper City Pages nine times. Mischke hosted a daily webcast entitled In the Stream for City Pages from March 2009 until February 2010. He currently hosts The Nite Show weekdays 10 PM to Midnight on WCCO Radio.

Brash, opinionated and consistently outspoken, the irascible Ron Rosenbaum is an authentic Twin Cities character. Rosenbaum is (in no particular order) a lover of gambling, cigars, and — most of all — calling it as he sees it. His political beliefs may best be described as iconoclastic. In other words, he’s not drinking anybody’s Kool-aid. He brings to Twin Cities News Talk years of experience working in talk radio and television. Years ago when he was — as he puts it — “young and stupid,” he was recruited to help tame racially torn South Boston High School. He’s also been a Boston Globe correspondent and a practicing attorney, a Minnesota Law & Politics “Super Lawyer” for years. If you’re looking around town for him, your best bet is on the golf course, in the bar at The Lex or at Canterbury Park.

#208 Michael Malone and Tim Bedore

May 30, 2013
3

Love mashed potatoes?  Then this episode is for you.

Michael Malone takes many forms on stage. His intense yet worried persona makes him consistently a crowd favorite. He stands out from his peers with his rubber face, energy, sarcasm and wildly imaginative views on life experiences. Malone has performed in over 20 states, he has been featured on the Bob and Tom Radio Show, XM Satellite Radio and performed for our U.S. Troops. Malone loves kids and is okay with the idea of playing birthday parties and dressing like a funny clown or favorite cartoon character of the child’s choice.

Over the past 20 years Tim Bedore has spent thousands of hours entertaining audiences, first on the radio and then as a comedian, headlining comedy clubs across the country. One of the few young comics to have combined the disciplines of stand-up comedy and broadcasting, Tim knows the rigors of working within demanding parameters. Tim has kept his hand in the radio business through his radio commentary feature Vague But True®, which is heard (since 1997) regularly on public radio’s prestigious Marketplace program by over six-million people. Tim has written and recorded over two hundred-fifty installments of Vague But True. Producing these weekly commentaries for the radio keeps Tim’s stand-up comedy material fresh and topical.

#207 Brian Turner

Brian offers the crew a feast of legends.  Chocolate legends.

My (BT’s) dad loved the radio, so it was his regular listenership that got me hooked as a kid. Dad was a great storyteller, too, so I think he would have excelled at the craft. In all my years at Robbinsdale High School, I was the anchor for the morning announcements, hence, a career path was born. (This made it hard to skip first period, though. My absence was easily noted.) After high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and really got a start on my professional track. In my 6-1/2 years in the military, I was a broadcaster and journalist and traveled the world. My first commercial radio gig was at the original K-TWIN –  a smooth jazz station broadcasting from Anoka, Minnesota. Since then, I’ve proudly spent my entire broadcast career in my home area – St. Paul and Minneapolis. The people in these Twin Cities and surrounding communities are the reason that I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

#203 Bengt Washburn

May 23, 2013

This is, perhaps unsurprisingly, not the first time we’ve interviewed a homeless person.

Bengt Washburn was born in Salt Lake City, Utah but grew up in a large Utah town (1,200 people) as the fifth child in a small Mormon family (7 children). Bengt is married to an officer in the United States Airforce. They have lived in 6 different cities over the last eleven years. Most recently he moved to Springfield, Virginia (Washington D.C.) after living in Stuttgart, Germany for 3 years. Bengt is a former winner of the prestigious San Francisco International Comedy Competition. He has been seen on The Late Late Show with Craig Fergusen, Live at Gotham on Comedy Central and most recently Conan on TBS. He was invited to perform at the Vancouver International Comedy Festival, The Boston Comedy Festival, the Aspen Laff Festival and Gilda’s Laugh Fest in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

#202 Jim Gaffigan

May 22, 2013

Come sit at the dinner table with Jim.  Make sure not to overstay your visit like we did.

Gaffigan’s comedy routines often include humorous, high-pitched “asides” representing commentary on his performance from a hypothetical naive and easily offended audience member. These were inspired by his sister. Gaffigan is also known for routines or skits relating to being lazy and eating food, especially popular routines regarding Hot Pockets, cake, and bacon. In 2004 Gaffigan’s stand up material was featured in Comedy Central’s animated series Shorties Watchin’ Shorties. His 2006 album, Beyond the Pale, consisted primarily of material regarding food and American eating habits. The album was accompanied by an hour-long special on Comedy Central of the same name, which was released on DVD. His 2009 album, King Baby, was also a television special filmed in Austin, Texas at the end of his “The Sexy Tour”. On February 25, 2012, Gaffigan taped a one-hour stand-up special Mr. Universe at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. He announced that, based on the business model used by Louis C.K.’s Live at the Beacon Theater, the stand-up would be available online through his website for $5, with $1 of the proceeds going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

Listening Tips

1. When listening to the live show if you have a WiFi signal and are in one location the whole time you listen, you should not have any stoppages.

2. When listening to a recorded podcast, download the show first and then click play. If you attempt to download the show while driving, your phone will attempt to go from 4G to 3G to WiFi, which causes interruptions.
